  The Disability Discrimination Act
Dyslexia is recognised under the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 and compliance with it places responsibility on employers to enable access to premises and services by all staff and customers. Employers also have a duty to make reasonable adjustments for disabled staff. These adjustments are anticipatory in nature and are not only applicable when a disabled person has requested them.

Access Education can help employers meet the needs of the Act by offering specialist services to individuals and their organisations.

The Disability Equality Duty
The Disability Equality Duty came into force in December 2006 and aims to promote disability equality across the public sector. It sets out what public authorities must do in order to promote equality of opportunity:
  • Publish a Disability Equality Scheme (including an Action Plan)
  • Involve disabled people in producing the Scheme and Action Plan
  • Demonstrate that they have taken actions in the Scheme and achieved appropriate outcomes
  • Report on progress
  • Review and revise the Scheme.

  The next step
Should you need to set in motion a programme, or if you have concerns about a specific employee, please call us to discuss. We offer Consultancy and Assessments within the workplace, at our Centre, or at your employee's home.

Our current project "Ability and Literacy Testing in the Workplace", will identify dyslexia. However, a more specific testing procedure will need to be administered after this initial screening. Whilst ability and literacy are covered in depth, an employee identified as dyslexic will need to undergo further profiling.

Please note that our opinions are honest and unbiased. It is fair to say, however, that our sympathies are with the dyslexic individual. If you need a report that will disadvantage a dyslexic, we are not the Centre you are looking for.
